Disney’s Hollywood Studios (formerly known as Disney-MGM Studios) park is built on five themed areas and unlike other Walt Disney World parks, the Disney’s Hollywood Studios park does not have a defined layout, it is similar to a real motion picture studio would with a mass of streets and buildings that blend into each other, the park’s major attractions are Hollywood Boulevard, the Backlot, Mickey Avenue, Animation Courtyard and Sunset Boulevard.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios Themed Areas

Hollywood Boulevard

Hollywood Boulevard is lined with shops selling Disney merchandise and food and is the location of the, Disney Stars and Motor Cars Parade and also includes the Great Movie Ride, which is located at the end of Hollywood Boulevard along with the A.T.A.S. Hall of Fame Plaza, which features many of the past and present television icons.

The Backlot

The Backlot area of the park includes the former New York Street set, which was part of the original Backlot Studio Tour, now known as the Streets of America and has been opened to foot traffic and includes additional set pieces representing San Francisco and Chicago. The Backlot also includes themed shows including;

  • Finale at Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt ShowStar Tours, which is a ride set in the Star Wars universe.
  • Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, which is a live-action performance show, showing how movie stunts are done, the show re-enacts various scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  • Sounds Dangerous, which is a 3-D audio presentation featuring comedian Drew Carey.
  • Jim Henson’s Muppet*Vision 3D, which is a 3-D movie experience featuring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and other Muppet characters.
  • Lights, Motors, Action, Extreme Stunt Show, which is a behind-the-scenes look at how vehicle action sequences are created for films.
  • Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure, which is an oversized playground based on the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Mickey Avenue

Mickey Avenue runs adjacent to the old Sound-stages 1, 2 and 3 and connects the Streets of America to the Animation Courtyard and includes;

  • The Disney’s Hollywood Studios Backlot Tour (formerly known as Disney-MGM Studios Backlot Tour), which shows how movie special effects are created, visitors can see a movie scene set on the Special Effects Water Tank filmed using volunteers from the audience and various special effects, in an action sequence called Harbor Attack. Visitors can also board trams and are taken through Catastrophe Canyon, to see the fire and water effects, and are also driven past a large-scale movie props area.
  • Walt Disney - One Man’s Dream, is a museum-like walk-through attraction that explores the life of Walt Disney and his legacy through photos, models and rare artifacts with a short biographical film narrated by Julie Andrews.
  • Journey Into Narnia - Creating the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, is a walk-through interactive attraction featuring an appearance from the White Witch and props from the movie.
  • The American Film Institute Showcase, is a rotating exhibit of movie props and memorabilia.
  • Toy Story Mania!, is planned to open in 2088 and will be an interactive attraction inspired by classic carnival midway games and featuring popular Pixar characters.

Animation Courtyard

Animation Courtyard includes the Voyage of The Little Mermaid, a live performance using puppets, lasers, movies, human actors, and water mist to re-create the animated Little Mermaid movie, The Magic of Disney Animation, is a short presentation showing how animated films are made and the Playhouse Disney Live on Stage, is a live performance featuring puppet characters from the Playhouse Disney block of programming on The Disney Channel.

Sunset Boulevard

Sunset Boulevard includes, the Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, which is a stage show featuring highlights of the film, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, which is an indoor roller coaster in the dark with three inversions and a high-speed launch, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, which is a thrill ride that drops visitors in an elevator in a randomized set of four sequences each involving multiple high-speed drops and ascents, with additional special effects including scents, lighting and sound which enhance the ride experience only with Fantasmic, which is a night time show with characters and fireworks held in the adjacent Hollywood Hills Amphitheatre.

Live Entertainment

Disney’s Hollywood Studios includes a wide array of characters and performers, such as characters from Jojo’s Circus, Little Einsteins and Kim Possible. Similarly along with new characters from Disney and Pixar animated features, such as those from Meet the Robinsons and Pixar’s Ratatouille also the park has live musical acts, such as the cover band Mulch, Sweat and Shears and the a cappella quartet Four For a Dollar, who perform on the parks streets.

Also like the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom parks, the Disney’s Hollywood Studios also runs daily parades down Hollywood Boulevard, the Disney Stars and Motor Cars parade features the park’s characters riding in specially decorated themed cars also several times each day, the High School Musical 2 - School’s Out show will travel Hollywood Boulevard before performing a live street show in front of the Sorcerer’s Hat.

Annual Events

The Disney’s Hollywood Studios hosts a number of seasonal events during the year that will often draw thousands of fans to the park, which includes;

ESPN The Weekend (late winter), which features commentators from the Disney-owned cable sports channels as well as sports celebrities.

Star Wars Weekends (June), brings Star Wars fans and celebrities together for special park events, the weekends are generally held in late May and June and includes the 501st Legion (a worldwide Star Wars costuming group) parading through the park in Stormtrooper costumes, two (or more) Star Wars actors appearing each weekend for photos and autographs, Jedi Lightsaber Training classes for kids, and other activities.

ABC Super Soap Weekend (November), pays tribute to the legions of fans of the ABC’s long-running soap operas, visitors can meet stars from All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital.

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights (November-January), takes over the Streets of America during the holiday season, the display features over five million Christmas lights on more than 350 miles of wire.
